June 8th was a very full and picturesque day in the Swiss Alps, including:
- A Gondola ride to the top of the Schilthorn
- Views, thrill walks, and the 007 Museum
- A Hike for some to Lauterbrunnen and for others to Grütschalp
- A dinner surprise in Murren
- A Birthday celebration
The Schilthorn (9,744 ft) is a summit in the Bernese Alps of Switzerland. It overlooks the valley of Lauterbrunnen in the Bernese Oberland, and is the highest mountain in the range lying north of the Sefinenfurgge Pass.
Schilthorn lies above the village of Mürren, from where a cable car leads to its summit.
We rode that cable car and enjoyed spectacular views on a gorgeous clear morning!
“The Thrill Walk” is 650 foot long bridge that clings to the side of the rock at Schilthorn. It includes an optional glass walk, crawl-through tunnel, and metal tightrope.
Fun photo-op posing like 007 as seen through a gun barrel.
And lots of photo ops in front of the Alps!
After taking the gondola back down to Mürren, many on our tour took about a 3-mile hike to Grütschalp.
From Grütschalp, a fun gondola ride to Lauterbrunnen where four of us met up for a bite and a walk around town.
Returning to our lovely chalet in Murren, we enjoyed another bite to eat and a birthday cake for Rodney.
Then we were blessed with a huge rainbow seen right from the window.
And of course we had to run outside to capture different views of it!
June 9th – The day began at Trümmelbach Falle – – a series of ten glacier-fed waterfalls inside the mountain, and made accessible by a tunnel-funicular. Built in 1913, the falls carry up to 20,000 litres of water per second.
Later, some of us took a cable car ride to Grimmelwald, a small traffic free village with a population of less than 150.
Others took the train to Interlaken and caught a scenic boat ride on Lake Brienz.
The evening ended with a spontaneous happy hour with wine, cheese, and goodies from the trip.
Then we all went to a concert by musicians playing the accordion and alphorn, followed by dinner at the hotel.
