The Travelin' Trio met in San Antonio to make a Photobook of our trip "Alpine Adventures"
October 7-10, 2022
For this photobook session we ended up at Karen's house in San Antonio instead of the normal B&B.
She picked us up at the airport late Friday morning and we went straight to Rudy’s BBQ for some Texas barbecue for lunch!
For dinner Friday night we ventured down to the San Antonio Riverwalk. We thought we would go to Casa Rio Mexican Restaurant (there since 1946) but when we arrived we were greeted by the sign “Waitlist is full”. An unusual sign but they don't take reservations and there were a lot of people waiting to get in! So we wandered a bit down the Riverwalk and found Republic of Texas Restaurant. Approriately named, they have great decor (Texas flag umbrellas, Lone Star chairs, Texas trivia menu) and an ideal location (we could practically touch the boats going by on the San Antonio River). The beef fajitas were delish — so tender and flavorful. The frozen margarita wasn’t bad and the chips and salsa were good, too! 😋
Texas Selfie Museum: We only walked by this place and didn’t go in but I think it’s a requirement to take a selfie here.
“Mutton Busting” is an event where children under age 8 ride a sheep for as long as they can, no saddle and they just hold on to the sheep’s fur. The sheep are shorn so that the hair on their front is a little longer. No one stayed on very long so it was hard to get photos until the last contestant, a 4-year old who hung on for dear life. He was impressive. He’s at the end of the line (I love how they hold hands going in and out of the arena like they’re on a field trip) holding his trophy.
Saturday we took a break from photobook production to enjoy an evening with additional friends at the Tejas Rodeo Company in Bulverde. This place is over-the-top Texas stereotype fun! We enjoyed watching all these events:
- Grand Entry/Opening
- Bull Riding
- Drill Team Performance
- Team Roping
- Mutton Busting
- Calf Scramble
- Breakaway Roping
- Tie Down Roping
- Barrel Racing
- Bull Riding
No visit to Texas would be complete without a stop at H-E-B, a privately held supermarket chain based in San Antonio with more than 380 stores throughout Texas and Mexico (named for Howard Edward Butt). They always have the best products and great produce plus fun surprises that make you want to walk every aisle. we stopped at the world’s largest HEB on the way home. Of course, everything’s bigger in Texas but this store is really huge. And yet, it has wide aisles, clean floors, ultra neat shelves, and BBQ supplies on the seasonal products aisle including Texas-shaped jalapeño grill rack for roasting peppers and a patty maker in the shape of Texas.
Sunday morning we attended services at Oak Hills Church. The place was full by the time Max Lucado gave his sermon. It was so inspiring!!
